More about Classic plates

What are Classic plates?

Classic plates, formally named R&S Series plates, are a type of vehicle registration plate specific to South Australia (SA). They hold unique historic significance as the general issue plates used in SA from 1967 to 1990.

What size is a Classic number plate?

The Classic number plate size is the same as the standard number plate size, measuring 371mm x 133mm. These dimensions are suitable for both the front and rear of your vehicle.

What is the difference between Classic plates and standard plates?

Classic plates follow the format of three letters starting with either an ‘R’, ‘S’ or ’U’ followed by 3 numbers (e.g. REG727, UAA121).

Current standard number plates begin with an ‘S’, followed by 3 numbers and 3 letters (S000 XXX).

How long will my Classic plates take to arrive?

Your Classic plates will be ready in about 10 working days.

You can collect them from your nominated Service SA Customer Service Centre or have them mailed to you for a $22 postage fee.

Can I transfer my old Classic plates to another vehicle?

Yes. If you have a car with the original R, S or U Series number plates, you can keep the number plate and display it on another vehicle registered in your name.

Visit the SA GOV website for the required application forms and fees to change a vehicles plate number. Submit the form in person to a Service SA customer service centre and pay the fees.

Label requirements for hydrogen, electric and gas powered vehicles

You must include a warning label on your number plate if your vehicle:

  • is gas fuelled, hydrogen or electric powered (including hybrids); and
  • was built or modified after 1 January 2019.

These labels assist emergency services with easily and quickly identifying vehicles that have been powered by alternative fuels. This will allow them to take any necessary precautions when providing assistance.
